Whenever I hear someone say “I think the country is ready for a female president”(or ask if the country is), typically in regards to Hillary’s prospective 2016 run, I want to quip with:
Are you implying that prior to now, women were unable and incapable of holding this office? That they didn’t possess the skills that the country would expect in a president? Doesn’t that suggest they have been incompetent in this regard until the 21st century?
Asking if the “country is ready” is an incredibly odd question. What, are we not aware of what a female is, or what they look like? Are female citizens classified as some kind of foreign alien or something?
They’ve ALWAYS been ready and able. Women have and will always be viable candidates for the highest office. I know the trend is typically rich old white men, and now just rich men… the transition is slow, but it’s happening. Regardless, the skills have been and remained the same since the country was founded, so again, they’ve ALWAYS been able and the “country” knows full well what a female is and what she’s capable of….
… and honestly it should have happened looooooong ago.
